הופכים הוגה לפקיד

דייוויד גראבר הוא מרצה לאנתרופולוגיה ב-London School of Economics, אבל הוא בוודאי מוכר טוב יותר כאחד ההוגים האידיאולוגיים של תנועת Occupy. גראבר מצהיר שהוא אנארכיסט. לאור זה לא צריך להפתיע שהוא ביקורתי מאד כלפי האקדמיה. בכתבה ב-Chronicle of Higher Education הוא קובל על השתלטות הניהול על ההוראה, הלמידה, והמחקר שבעיניו צריכים להיות במרכז העשייה הקדמית. הוא מתאר מצבים שבהם חוקרים אקדמיים מצויינים ממלאים תפקידים ניהוליים שדורשים הכנת ניירות עבודה שבסך הכל מצדיקות את קיומם:
Experiences like that revealed to me a special vision of hell: Eternal damnation is a group of people performing unnecessary, unpleasant tasks that they are bad at and can’t stand doing — but spend all their time on anyway because they are so indignant about the prospect that anyone else might be doing less. Change, if it is to come, will have to come from outside the academy.

רעיון האקדמיה הוא רעיון מצויין. אבל אם לא ידענו זאת קודם, גראבר עוזר לנו להבין שהמציאות רחוקה מאד מהרעיון.

היתכן בלוג במקום מאמר אקדמי?


מרטין וולר בוחן את היחס בין המאמרים האקדמיים שהוא כותב, לבין מספר הפוסטים שהוא כותב לבלוג שלו. הוא מגלה (לא להפתעתו) שהוא פרסם יותר מאמרים אקדמיים לפני שהוא התחיל לנהל את הבלוג שלו. הוא מביא שתי סיבות אפשריות לכך:

1) The motivation to write papers has decreased – apart from getting an RAE ranking, the main reason to publish is to share ideas and fulfill a creative urge to write. Blogging meets these needs better than formal publications.
 
2) There is more than one way to network. I'm not a big fan of attending conferences (I've got enough bags, thanks), but I used to go to quite a few as this was the only way of getting to know those in your field. So, I used to write conference papers to achieve this aim. Now, I have a much wider and richer network through blogging and twitter, so that motivation is also reduced. I still think it's valid, and meeting people face to face adds to that network, but it doesn't have the monopoly it once did.

        Blogging impacts on formal academic output

בסביבה האקדמית מאמרים שמתפרסמים בכתבי עת מכובדים מוסיפים לסטטוס של הכותב, דבר שבדרך כלל לא קורה עם פוסטים לבלוג. אבל לפי וולר הוא כותב מפני שהוא רוצה לשתף, ומפני שפשוט יש לו דחף לכתוב, ולכן הירידה במספר המאמרים שהוא מפרסם איננה מפריעה לו.
