העתיד איננו רק מכשיר נוצץ

מכשיר ה-iPad יצא לחנויות, ורבים כותבים עליו ועל ההשפעה הענקית על כיצד אנחנו מבינים מה זה ספר שמנבאים לו. דייוויד ויינברגר מתלהב קצת פחות:

The book of the future is already here. It’s been here for about 15 years. It’s called The Web.

That’s taking books as the medium by which we develop, preserve, and communicate ideas and knowledge. The Web is already that book — distributed, linked, messy, unstable, self-contradictory, bottom up and top down, never done, unsettled and unsettling, by us and of us. The book of the future has a trillion pages and trillions of links, and is only getting started.

The book of the future has arrived!

כמו רבים אחרים, גם אני נפעם מהמכשיר הטכנולוגי החדש, אבל הוא בסך הכל מכשיר. הווב הוא משהו הרבה יותר גדול ומשמעותי.

החינוך כבר לא יהיה כמו שהיה?

טים סטאמר מודה שהוא ישמח לקבת iPad (גם אני לא אתלונן אם מישהו רוצה לתת לי), אבל הוא מזהיר שכלי חדש, מושך ומרשים ככל שיהיה (ולמען האמת, לא ברור שהפעם Apple באמת הצליחו להדהים אותנו) איננו מה שישנה את החינוך:

In the case of education, nothing gets transformed if institutions latch on to it as a textbook replacement, a digital notebook, an expensive electronic replacement for a Trapper Keeper.

Change in how teachers teach and students learn will not flow from putting the same old curriculum materials on a tablet and then using it with the same teacher-directed lessons, primarily focused on preparing kids for standardized tests.

Mobile communications devices such as the iPad will only have an impact if they become individual learning platforms that regularly change to meet the needs of the person carrying it.

האמת היא שכבר התרגלנו לקרקס שפוגשים כל פעם שהכלי האולטימטיבי החדש יוצא לשוק. אפשר אולי לטעון שמדובר בטקס מעבר, בפולחן שהקהילה החינוכית משתתפת בו. חבל. אם היינו מתלהבים קצת פחות, יכול להיות שהיינו מצליחים לזהות חידושים אמיתיים שבאמת יכולים להשפיע לטובה על החינוך.

נחמד מאד, אבל לא בהכרח מה שדרוש

אם מישהו יתעקש לתת לי iPad כמתנה, אני בוודאי לא אסרב לקבל אותו. ובכל זאת, ועם כל ההפעלות מטכנולוגיה נהדרת, מדובר בכלי שמתקשה להלהיב. נדמה לי שדיוויד ויינברגר מיטיב להסביר למה:

Will it do well? I dunno. Probably. But is it the future of reading? Nope. It’s the high-def, full-color, animated version of the past of reading.

The future of reading is social. The future of reading blurs reading and writing. The future of reading is the networking of readers, writers, content, comments, and metadata, all in one continuous-on mash.

אין שום דבר פסול במכשיר דיגיטאלי שיאפשר לנו לקרוא ספרים (הרבה ספרים) בהנאה ובנחת, מבלי להעמיס על המדפים שכבר מלאים מדי. אבל אם מדובר בעתיד של הקריאה, צריכים להתקדם לכיוונים אחרים. אגב, ג'ורג' סימנס מעלה ספקות מהיבט חשוב אחר לגבי עד כמה המכשיר החדש הזה באמת יהיה לטובתנו.
