גרי סטייגר השתתף באותו דיון ב-NECC שעליו דיווח ריצ'רד ווג'וודסקי. הוא העלה את דבריו בבלוג שלו. הוקצו לו חמש דקות, וכל מה שהוא אמר ראוי ביותר לקריאה, אבל בכל זאת, אפשר לפחות לצטט טיפה:

This community and this conference were once synonymous with progressive education, but sadly that is no longer the case. Too many of us have spent the past eight years reacting to mean-spirited political fantasies while blindly using technology to support No Child Left Behind and other medieval educational practices.

We took our eye off the ball by focusing on nonsense like data warehousing, checklists and computerized testing.

We know better. Wondrous things occurred when creative computer-use bestowed agency upon learners.

We were once excited by the remarkable opportunities computers offered for children to learn new things in new ways unimaginable even just a few years ago.

However, depriving children of the richest possible educational experiences when we know better shows the bricks and mortar of our soul

This is my beef: we still haven’t defined what ‘online learning’ is. I’ve looked at two major companies running online courses recently and what I’ve seen is that their version of ‘online learning’ is a rebuild of ‘textbook learning’. How is that any different than what we’ve got? Horn talks a lot about how bricks-and-mortar schools ‘confine’ students — well, so do textbooks. And online courses can just as easily fall into the ‘textbook mentality’.

מהסקירה של ווג'וודסקי אפשר להתרשם שהדיון כולו היה מאד מעניין, עם נקודות קולעות גם מצד אלה שלא רואים עתיד בבית הספר המובנה, וגם מצד אלה שרואים ב-"מקום" ערך. הסקירה במלואה ראוייה לקרואה, אבל ההערה של ווג'וודסקי קולעת לאחד הנושאים שמאד מעסיקים אותי.

לא בעתיד הנראה לעין

טים סטאמר מגיב לפוסט קצרצר של סקוט מקלוד. מקלוד סבור שבעתיד הלא רחוק בתי הספר כפי שאנחנו מכירים אותם ייעלמו מהשטח. סטאמר חושב אחרת:

Too many people have warm fuzzy feelings for their memory of K12 education, and make no connection between the radical ways in which the world at large has changed it’s approach to learning and communicating and our traditional system for educating children.

No, as much as I would like to believe it’s coming, I just don’t see any radical, tear-up-the-floorboards-and-start-over educational revolutions coming soon.

הניחוש שלי הוא שסטאמר צודק, אבל לא רק בגלל הסיבה המרכזית שהוא מעלה – הקשר הרגשי שקיים אצל רבים לשיטות החינוך הקיימות. לדעתי, החינוך משולב באופן הדוק ביותר בכלל המערכות החברתיות, הכלכליות והתרבותיות של החברה, כך שהסיכוי לשינוי גורף קטן מאד.
