In the case of education, nothing gets transformed if institutions latch on to it as a textbook replacement, a digital notebook, an expensive electronic replacement for a Trapper Keeper.

Change in how teachers teach and students learn will not flow from putting the same old curriculum materials on a tablet and then using it with the same teacher-directed lessons, primarily focused on preparing kids for standardized tests.

Mobile communications devices such as the iPad will only have an impact if they become individual learning platforms that regularly change to meet the needs of the person carrying it.

        The Miracle, Education-Altering iPad (Maybe)

I was just walking through the woods near Narragansett Bay with my dog and thought to myself, "On this trail, in these woods, away from anything human-made, of what relevance are computers?" This thought often occurs to this particular outdoors fanatic.

If you can’t see the technology or if you are not using it, surely it has no effect. It’s all a mirage; we are as we have always been.

But, then, I thought, the technology has completely altered my assumptions about work, about learning, about other people, about communications, about how I structure other people in my mind, about how problems get solved, about where I go for information, and even about what humanity is. We carry the effects of information technology around in our heads all the time, the “we” being the people reading this newsletter.

'But I Don't Want to Teach My Students How to Use Technology'

Maybe it’s just the rural community in which we live, but I don’t think that’s actually the source of disconnect with the rest of the world in 2009. I think I just witnessed a major generation gap from which I’d been somewhat isolated working with students for so long and living, eating, and breathing tech for quite a few years.

These parents, teachers, and community members literally just didn’t even think to communicate electronically. I’m actually connected with a few of them on Facebook and one asked about getting content posted on the school and district websites, so I know there were exceptions, but overall, it was quite apparent that the generation gap is alive and well. Since these folks are largely parents of high school seniors, they tend to be in their 40’s and early 50’s. While the parents of our younger students seem to be fairly well-connected, our older parents (with some exceptions) just seem to have missed social media entirely.

        What century is this?

For, any teaching practice requires technology. Are we to imagine that these luddite professors disallow paper and pen from class? “Students should not take notes in class, the technology gets in the way of discussion.” Are we to imagine that they do not allow books in class? “No books, they get in the way of discussion.” Books, paper, pen, desks, chalkboards, whiteboards, all of these are technologies. In fact clothing itself is a technology, so if a professor really wanted to be against technology he would have to give up his tweed jacket and bow tie, because as a technology this might get in the way of the students learning, instead really go “naked” so as to better connect with the students.

On What it Would Mean to Really Teach “Naked”

But because we aim so high, buying into a false promise of romance and happy ever after, we don't even see all the ways we do change, all the ways technology has transformed our arrangements and should be (therefore!) transforming the ones that require our participation. What? It doesn't just happen externally, because of the Internet? We have to do something too? What kind of a basis for a relationship is that?

        "Disappointed" in the Internet

Today’s waves I do not choose to navigate on the rope: my Google Reader’s 3000+ items since before NECC (and before computer crash). I think a graceful “Mark all as read” is in order.

Risk slack or let go of the rope?

You thought ed tech was silly in 1983? You were partly right. You thought ed tech was silly in 1996? You were partly right. You think ed tech is silly now? You are out of touch.

And what’s changed?

What’s changed is that the ed tech of yesteryear was always about finding ways of bringing technology into the classroom. The reality of today is that your kids are bringing more technological sophistication into the classroom in their pockets than your school has likely managed to accomplish over the last thirty years. What's changed is that our students are living in an immediately connected world where it takes 10 seconds to connect to the whole of human knowledge as well as the billions of people creating it.

        Disconnected

Water is not a natural place for human beings, but we can gain a feel for it. Some gain it faster that others, but even the nervous child who falls in by mistake will learn to move about using a comfortable stroke to get where he wants to go, given the right encouragement and support. The swimmers among us owe our time and support to those less comfortable so everyone can find a “feel” for the water. Stop and try to recall the panic you felt at falling in. Remember watching your child or a neighbor who genuinely believed that he/she would NEVER be able to move through water. Think about those you know (maybe it’s you) who swim only with their faces OUT of the water, safe and dry. Their head-out style wastes energy, but it is what they know. They can change it, but each one’s needs will be different and each will require encouragement, time, and a chance to “feel” the water.

As we go to NECC, edtech-swimmers all, we should remember the swimmers’ obligation to share the feel of the water and find ways to make it part of our “swim practice.”

        The Swimmers’ Obligation

Political revolutions are often closely linked to communication tools. The American Revolution wasn’t caused by the proliferation of pamphlets, written to whip colonists into a frenzy against the British. But it sure helped.

Twitter on the Barricades: Six Lessons Learned

We've learned a great lesson here: that no matter how much money and technology you pour into something, it's really the people [who] matter.

School of the Future: Lessons in failure
